This collaborative article is the product of the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium of 1963. By the time of this meeting a great deal of information about the code and the translation process had been obtained, but the fine structure of the codon base sequences remained to be clarified. The authors discuss the efficiency of synthetic polynucleotides, coding ratios, the current "code word dictionary," and synthesis of nucleotides. Tables and figures are included.
