The following is an excerpt from a letter Lederberg wrote to Cambridge Mayor Alfred E. Vellucci defending genetic recombinant research at Harvard University. The letter was one of several written by some leading biologists at the time. Dr. Lederberg's letter, along with ones by Howard M. Termin and Arthur Kornberg were included as part of an article entitled, "The Case Against Genetic Engineering" by George Wald in the September-October 1976 issue of The Sciences.
