This is one of Lederberg's earliest serious correspondence. Jack Edman was Lederberg's closest friend and one of several classmates of his from Stuyvesant High School who later served in World War 2 in the Signal Corps. The format is that of a "V-gram", a cannonical mode of letter-writing during the war. For security and to save shipping weight, they were often microfilmed.
