Carnegie Institution of Washington Yearbook McClintock, Barbara, 1902-1992
McClintock described further experiments on the new mutable genes she discovered in her 1944 research on plant B-87. She noted that one of the mutables in the descendants of plant B-87 could not be explained by BFB or ring behavior, and exhibited characteristics that indicated that mutation rates and timing were controlled. From these observations, McClintock began to formulate the hypothesis that would be the basis of her research for the next two decades.
