Abstract:
Luria pondered the mechanisms by which multiple mutants arise, and believed that the bacterial mutations discussed here presented analogies with gene mutations in higher organisms. This paper also discussed the identification of single mutation steps in strains with different genotypes and of multiple effects of mutations. Luria spent the 1945-1946 academic year on leave in Cold Spring Harbor, directing a government research project on bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
