In this article, Luria reported that several phages killed by ultraviolet light, then put into the same cell, can often revive themselves and produce normal progeny. He noted that if specific genes were intentionally damaged, through exchanges with another phage they can reconstitute as a normal, undamaged phage. Luria interpreted this as an instance of genetic recombination. This article is a more formal and detailed presentation of his 1947 article in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."
