Abstract:
Reflecting his growing social concern, Luria digressed from the announced topic of this symposium at the University of Rochester, the "Impact of Genetics on Medicine," to discuss instead the relationship of biology and social concerns. He specifically addressed what he perceived to be the increase in pressure being placed on biologists to focus on what Luria categorizes as essentially social problems, such as environmental degradation, industrial pollution, population increases, urbanization, and crime. A similar version of this talk appeared as an article in the "New York Review of Books" on 22 February 1974.
