Lerman obtained physical chemical evidence that chemicals of the acridine type, specifically proflavin, produced mutations in genes by which individual bases where added to, or deleted from, the base sequence, thereby changing the sequence and, with it, the order of the amino acids in the protein for which the gene coded. By contrast, other mutations consist of substitutions of bases.
