Abstract:
In this letter to the editor of Nature Crick outlined a theory of how the genetic code for proteins might have evolved through incorporation of additional amino acids, followed by natural selection. Crick envisioned that the genetic code had undergone three evolutionary stages, from a primitive to a final code.. Crick maintained a life-long interest in evolution and the origins of life, which he believed would have to be explained if mankind was to develop a rational, scientific view of the world.
