In this letter Doty, a scientific colleague and friend of both Crick and Watson, supported Watson's plan to publish The Double Helix despite Crick's objections. Doty argued that by making the process of scientific discovery accessible to lay readers, the book served an important purpose "because science has come to lie so completely in the public realm from which it derives its support."
