The Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), successor to the MRC's Unit for the Structural Study of Biological Systems at the Cavendish Laboratory, opened on the campus of the new Addenbrooke's Hospital on the outskirts of Cambridge in 1962 under the direction of Max Perutz. In their proposal Perutz and the heads of the LMB's three divisions (Crick, together with Sydney Brenner, headed the Division of Molecular Genetics, later called the Division of Cell Biology), laid out their research plans and the attendant space requirements for the laboratory in the 1960s.
