In this letter Crick mentioned Rosalind Franklin, the X-ray crystallographer on whose images he and Watson drew in uncovering the double helix. Franklin stayed with the Cricks in October and November of 1956, after undergoing a hysterectomy. Crick never asked Franklin about the nature of her "mysterious" illness. She would die of ovarian cancer on April 16, 1958.
