In his comments at the dedication of the Avery Memorial Gate at Rockefeller University, Stanley provided a brief history of the scientific research within several different disciplines, as well as some insight into the activities in Avery's Lab in the 1930s and 1940s, which led to the "discovery" by Avery, McCarty, and MacLeod in 1944.
