By utilizing specific immune reactions, Avery was able to recognize at least three subgroups (biologically related, yet possessing specific differential characteristics) of Pneumococcus Type II that had previously been identified by fellow Rockefeller Institute researchers Rufus Cole, Alphonse Dochez, and L. J. Gillespie.
