This study by Avery and Dochez was part of a larger effort to better understand how the presence of different variants of pneumococci resulted in occurrences of pneumonia in humans. This article specifically addressed the role of healthy carriers who were intimately associated with cases of lobar pneumonia (pneumonia affecting the lung).
