Safety-net providers bring patients online: lessons from early adopters
While research into the feasibility and benefits of providing online resources for underserved Americans continues, a few safety-net clinics around the country are already offering clients such tools as electronic health record (HER) portals and personal health records (PHRs). This report provides a look at the experiences of several early adopters, focusing on why and how the initiatives were undertaken; what services are provided and planned for the future; what benefits and challenges have been encountered; and what lessons would be useful for others interested in such programs. Because most of these initiatives are still young--in some cases, only a few months old--the case examples focus on objectives, plans, and start-up experiences.
