Image of an oil painting portrait of Joseph Lovell. Image caption on page 11 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Joseph Lovell (1788-1836) was the the first Surgeon General of the US Army Medical Department, from 1818 to 1836. Others had been charged with oversight of the Army's medical support previously, but until Congress reorganized the Army staff and appointed Lovell in 1818, there was no permanent position of Surgeon General."
