Drew was a highly decorated Army veteran, who, over the course of his 36-year military career, earned sixteen medals and citations, including the Soldier's Medal for Valor and the Legion of Merit. Drew was also an outstanding citizen of the community of the National Institutes of Health: in 1987, he became the first inductee in the agency's blood donor Hall of Fame."
