Image caption on page 42 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "In many ways, the library's Acquisition Division, shown here, ca. 1950, was the center of the library's activities: identifying and obtaining the materials required for a comprehensive international collection. Challenging enough in peacetime, the world wars made the task infinitely more difficult, as normal acquisition channels were blocked."
