The importation of pharmaceutical products is a Government monopoly. Pharmacists are supplied by the authorities, who restrict profit margins to a maximum of 10 per cent. Aleppo has a total of 248 doctors, 91 of whom work in the public health services. There services also employ four dentists, five pharmacists, 32 midwives, 172 nurses, 28 social workers, six laboratory technicians and 17 other technicians. Seven of the 28 hospitals are attached to the public health services, and each provides a different type of care. Home accidents are as frequent in Syria as anywhere else.
