Successful Bilharziasis control requires teamwork: Due to the many new irrigation schemes where the snail carriers can breed, this diease is rapidly inceasing throughout the world. Some 150 million people are known to be affected by bilharziasis, a debilitating affliction passed on to men by certain species of snails. Its social and economic consequences are enormous in some areas as bilhaziasis attacks children and yound men under twentyfive, causing substantial loses in man power in the most active years. For sucessful control, close collaboration is required between health adminstrators, sanitary engineers, health educators, biologists, clinicians, and those concerned with economic development. Brazil, with a known 4 million people affected by bilharziasis is carrying out a vigrous control campaign. Several centres, among them the Centro de Pesquisas Aggen Magalhass, in the Institute of Rural Endemic Diseases in Recife, are carrying out research on biology, ecology and classification of shails. Field experiments test the effectiveness of application of molluscicides. An intensive health education progranne is directed not only to school children but adults. Brazil has a go-ahead heath education programme which is closley linked with bilharziasis control.
