Abstract:
A young girl is sleeping on her back; there are flies around her eyes. Verso: World Health Day- 7 April 1962. Preserve sight; Prevent blindness. World Health Day, observed each year on 7 April, marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the Constitution of the World Health Organization in 1948. The theme chosen for 1962 is " The Prevention of Blindness" , and the object of World Health Day is to tell people how much preventable blindness exists in the world and what can be done to stop needless loss of sight. Trachoma- One sixth of the world's population affected. In India, a survey in the rural areas of Utter Prades where trachoma is highly endemic, showed that among children under two years of age, four in every ten were infected with trachoma. Among childrent above seven and among adults there were eight trachoma suffers out of every ten . Insanitary living conditions are largely responsible for those figures. An eminet eye surgeon has declared: " We are attacking trachoma in the clinics with aureomycin but we should be attacking it in the homes with soap and water. "
