A man is smoking opium. Verso: Opium Contol Campaign- Iran: Opium addicts still number millions in the world, mostly in Asia. In Iran, for instance, there are one and a half million opium addicts, resulting in 100,000 premature deaths, 50,000 abandoned children and 5,000 suicides each year. Today, the United Nations, the Food& Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organizations (WHO) are helping the Iranian government in the overall administration of an opium control campaign- by helping farmers off-set the loss of income from the banning of opium (poppy) crops, in the treatment and care of drug addicts, and in the training of national staff to carry on the work. $86,500 has been allocated by the United Nations Technical Assistance Board for this project. Here, an opium addict in Iran lights his pipe of dreams. When he was 18, and an athlete, he thought to " pep himself up" for a contest by taking a little opium. When these photographs were taken he was only 28. Opium had become his master. He was smoking 50 grams a day and spending almost the whole of his wages to buy opium. WHO/5820-5821-5822.
