Statistics show that cardiovasular diseases are the leading causes of death in adults today, and their incidence seems to be on the increase. WHO has launched a number of projects in several countries to obtain more knowledge about the factors which affect the heart and blood vessels. In a special issue World Health illustrates aspects of the research that is going on in this field. Congenital malformations of the heart originate in the embryo. Our photo shows micro x-ray photographs of a chick embryo heart from 3rd to 11th day. The development of malformations of ventricles can be followed through injections of contrasting material into the coronary arteries seen at the top of each photograph.
