Abstract:
A woman is unpacking a shipment of autopsy specimens. Verso: WHO/10488-B. General - Cardiovascular diseases. 6000 dead speak for the living at WHO/HQ, Geneva. The dead "speak" for the living in a large scale investigation organized by WHO on the hardening of the arteries (atherisclerosis), which is the cause of much illness and death. The photograph shows autopsy specimens of coronary arteries that have been collected in different countries and will be studied and will be studied and compared by expert pathologists. Factors taken into account include origin, and enviroment of the subject, age, sex, occupation, and cause of death. Scientists hope that study of the dead material will enable the practicing physician to diagnose disease in the living more effectively and improve understandings of how this serious condition is caused and may be controlled.
