In 8e»ate9 ►a» "-• V'; * March 25^ 1829. .■»s£ [Brought in by Mr. VIELE.] AN ACT To incorporate Manhattan Collège, The People ofthe State of New-York, représentée, in Senate and Assembly, do enaet 1 v § 1,« David Hosack, William James Macneven, Valentine Mott, John W. 2 Francis, John Griscom, and such other persons as shall associate with them 3 for the purpose of teaching médical science, are constitutëd and declareà* 4 a body corporate, for the purpose of teaching the diffèrent branches of me- 5 dical science in the city of New-York, by the corporate name of « Manhat- 6 tan Collège." ^r*-*^Éjs8;; 1 § 2. The affairs ofthe corporation shall be rnanaged by a board of seven 2 curators, to be chosen by the original associâtes, at a meeting, of which 3 public notice shall begiven for tendays, in one ofthe public newspapers i pnnted m the city of New-York. r r ° I § 3. The curators shall hâve power to appoint a président, registrar, and 2 the necessary teachers and professors, and remove them at pleasure ; to fill 3 vacancies thatmay arise intheirown number; to prescribe and alter the 4 necessary by-laws, for the régulation ofthe business ofthe collège • to hold 5 real and personal estate, not exceeding one hundred thousand dollars in 6 amount ; and to confer the degree of doctor of medicine, usual for other 7 médical collèges to confer, upon persons entitled thereto. 1 § 4. No degree shall be conferred by the authorities of said collège, udod 2 any candidate, unless he shall hâve studied at lenst three years after the 3 âge ot sixteen, with some respectable physician or surgeon authorised bv 4 law to practise, and shall hâve, after that âge, attended at least two com- 5 plete courses ofall the lectures delivered in an incorporated médical col- ' 6 lege, one of which shall hâve been in Manhattan collège : nor until he shall 7 hâve proved his proficiency in science, by passing creditably a strict exa- o mination before the professors of the said collège. 1 § 5. But said collège may confer the honorary degree of doctor of medi 2 cine, upon such individuals as they may deem worthy, on account of pre- 3 emment attainments in the science or practice ofthe healing art. .(■ ; 2 ) § 6.
