LBAVEM*. 1838. _s_•'__~ ** - fS RULES OF ETIQUETTE AND RATES OF CHARGES OF THE PHYSICIANS OF MOBILE. The Physicians of Mobile having for some time past felt the necessity of some regulations by which they should be guided in their professional intercourse with each other, and also the importance to the community and lo themselves of some fixed rates of charges for their services, a meeting was held on the 11th February, 1838, for the purpose of taking into consideration these and other matters connect- ed with the profession and the following regulations were unanimously adopted:— RULES OF ETIQUETTE. 1st. Resolved, that any interference with a patient under the charge of another physician is most scrupulously to be avoided, that no medling enquiries be made, no unnecessary hints given relctive to the nature or treatment of the case, nor any course of conduct pursued which may tend either directly or indirectly to injure the standing of the physician or impair the confidence reposed in him by the patient or 4 his friends—that we consider such conduct to be highly rep rehensible, unworthy of a gentleman, and as such to be dis. countenanced by every member of tho profession. 2nd. Resolved, That no physician shall attend a patient who is already under the care of another member of the profession, unless he h^Hltisfactory evidence that the for- mer physician has had due notice from the patient or his friends that Iris services ore no longer required. 3d. Resolved, That in case of consultation, it shall be the duty of the attending physician to furnish as correct a statement as may be, of the previous history and treatment of the case, and give the consulting physician every facility forinstituting such enquiries a9 he may deem necessary for its elucidation and the forming of an accurate judgement, that no subsequent visit be made but in concert, no state- ment or discussion of the case take place except in the pres ence of all the attending physicians, and no opinions or di- rections be jfiven which are not the result of previous delib- eration and concurrence. 4th. Resolved, Whenever a physician officiates for anoth- er who is sick or absent, he shall make n«*charge, but hand a memorandum of his visits to the person*for whom he actSi who will charge the same as if the services were rendered by himself—should however the sickness or absence be of long duration it may be optional with the person thus attend- ing to charge and receive the fees for his services. 5th. Resolved, that in case of emergency when called to visit a patient who is already under the care of another phy. sician, who cannot at ttie time be found or has no notice of such call—the physician thus summoned may act in such manner as he deems best suited to the exigencies of the 5 case; but it shall be his duty to give the earliest notice of the transaction lo the attending- physician, together with the treatment he found it necessary to adopt and request him to take charge of the patient. Resolved, that from and after this date no annual or or other contract will be entered into by any member of the profession, for medical services to individuals or families. 2nd. Resolved, that nil accounts against permanent resi- dent citizens (families) are due and to be collected semian- nually. ■* 3d. Resolwd, that all bills for medical services rendered to single men and transient persons are due and to be col- lected as soon as ' ervices are rendered. 4th. Resolved,""' lat we will not attend any person on ~1>0ard (connected with) Steamboats or vessel.; unless the Cap$«dn or owners become responsible for the charges in writing. 5th. In cases of poverty or Ion- continued illness in fami- lies of moderate property, or any cases of indigence, it shall be allowed the practitioner to abate the current amount of the bill to suit the ci.vums anccs, but such deduction must not be expressed on the bill rendered. 6 6th. Resolved, that such deductions may be made from the rates of the Fee Bill as the Surgeon may deem proper for Surgical services rendered to negroes. FEE BILL.
