ht~* 2- tfM QrLl1!* WMAIN HEADING/SUBHEADING COMBINATIONS MEDLARS Indexing Instructions U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE Public Health Service National Institutes of Health NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE MAIN HEADING-SUBHEADING COMBINATIONS MEDLARS Indexing Instructions by KEIJI G,OTO Keio University Tokyo, Japan iHllllIMIIIillHIillllMiW Bibliographic Services Division Index Section 1970 firoh i?7* cr T^Hft FOREWORD Subheadings as assigned to a specific category by MEDICAL SUBJECT HEADINGS (MeSH) were designed for use with most of the main headings in that category. The pairing of a main heading with a subheading in its cate- gory is routine and, in most cases, creates reasonable, intelligent and useful combinations. Unfortunately, subheadings legal for a given category occasionally form unlikely combinations which serve no pur- pose, e.g., RARE BOOKS (L) ^manpower: ^manpower was as- signed to Category L for use with appropriate headings, but it was certainly not to be used as in this example. To avoid foolish or impractical combinations,restric- tions on the use of subheadings appear in many of the ref- erence tools used by MEDLARS Indexers: the Indexing Manual, the Technical Notes, the Integrated Authority File, various memoranda, etc. In the pages which follow, Dr. Goto has gathered in a single place all of the present data on the permissible or restricted use of subheadings. Those in this list were taken from all of the above sources. Others were added as they came to mind in the editing process. Still more could be added to make this list complete but this is a project worthy more of MEDLARS II than of this tool. Suggestions for additional permissible or prohibited combinations are solicited. If many more come to our at- tention, either a supplementary list or a new edition will be distributed. Control of such legal or illegal combina- tions could be considered for MEDLARS II programming. The symbol * means that the Indexer may use the subheading which follows the * with the main heading under which it appears. The symbol - means that the subheading following the - cannot be used with the main heading in question. The Indexer can assume that (in almost every in- stance) if a subheading is permitted for a given main heading, it may be used correctly with any of the terms indented under that main heading in the MeSH categorized lists. Likewise, if a subheading is forbidden under a given main heading, it should not be used with, any term indented under that main heading in the MeSH category. Every subheading legal for a given main heading is not reproduced here in the interests of saving space. We have given, in most cases, a reading on a subheading which might spring to mind during indexing and which re- quires some direction toward its use or away from it.
