Description: This video offers an overview of the Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration of the founding of the National Library of Medicine. It opens with members of the United States Senate, Strom Thurmond and Claude Pepper, offering brief remarks. Edwin C. Whitehead, chair of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, reads a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan. Dr. Michael DeBakey also makes a short statement. There is a review of events including a session on Medicine and the Arts, and a talk by Dr. Albert Sabin which is cut off after a few sentences. Jill St. John discusses the history of the Library beginning with John Shaw Billings. Paul Harvey notes the sesquicentennial. There are brief comments by Frank Bradway Rogers, Martin M. Cummings, and Donald A.B. Lindberg. A session on space medicine with John B. West as speaker is included. Still images of places and individuals are threaded throughout the video.
