Description: This program describes and demonstrates simple, inexpensive procedures and treatments to manage filariasis, an illness for which the chief symptom is swelling -- sometimes massive -- of limbs, breasts, and genitals. Occurring mainly in the tropics, it is the second leading cause of disability in the world, and is caused by worms that are spread from person to person by mosquitoes. The program explains that washing the affected areas with soap and water can prevent germs that worsen the symptoms from entering the body through cuts and scrapes. Washing is followed by application of a disinfectant. Gentle exercises move fluid out of the limbs, and elevating limbs while sitting or sleeping also helps. Afflicted patients are shown applying the techniques.
