This session, part of the National Library of Medicine's 1976 Colloquium on the Bicentennial of Medicine, features Dr. Donald Frederickson, director of NIH, discussing the origins of the colloquium. Dr. John Z. Bowers then addresses key influences on the development of Ameican medicine in the last 200 years. Bowers describe three major factors: foreign scientific advancements in the age of the European Enlightenment, the flowering of the American university during the second half of the 19th century, and the influence of private wealth and philanthropy.
