This session, part of the National Library of Medicine's 1976 Colloquium on the Bicentennial of Medicine, features Dr. Mary Corning of NLM discussing the evolution and current state of the field of biomedical communications in the United States. She traces the development of biomedical literature and indices thereof, means of information transmission among creators and users, and the growth of contributions by U.S.-based scientists to the body of literature. Dr. Corning also addresses the work of Dr. John Shaw Billings in launching the collection that developed into the National Library of Medicine, the development of the earliest electronic databases of biomedical literature, and the evolution of copyright.
